Zero Emission Vehicle Summit

On the 11th of September (Tuesday), the first zero emissions summit was held at Birmingham’s International Conference Centre. It bought together industry experts and policy makers from around the world to tackle carbon emissions from road transport and figure out new ways to improve the quality of our air. The summit built on the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ which is a strategy that outlines how they will support the transition to zero emission road vehicles.

What does this mean?

There will be a £1.5 billion investment in low emission vehicles by 2020 as well as a fund of £4 million to support a charging point infrastructure. There is also a mission to end sales of petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040 and have almost every car and van zero emission by 2050.

Some industry experts have various opinions on these objectives, for example, Executive Director of Advocacy and Campaigns at WWF, Tony Juniper, said “If we are to protect nature from the increasing threats of climate change, we must be truly ambitious in cutting our emissions and aim for 100 per cent electric vehicle sales by 2030.”

The push for electric vehicles has been called “the greatest set of technical challenges since the space race.” Universities will also get a £106 million funding boost for research and development of eco-friendly vehicles, new batteries and low carbon technology.

What do you think of the transition to all electric?
