What You Need to Know About the New A Class Saloon

Do you like the new A Class? Well Mercedes-Benz have unveiled the standard and L Sport variant of the new A Class Saloon.

The new saloon sits below the C Class and will become the German car giant’s most affordable saloon model yet. This launch mirrors a similar move from the 1982 launch of the original 190 which sat below the E Class and was eventually rebadged as the C Class.

Mercedes A Class Saloon L Sport variant

The A Class Saloon is currently one sale in China, but the one being sold over here will have a longer wheel base in comparison. Mercedes-Benz’s chief design officer, Gordon Wagener, said the two are “the same model but in different lengths.” The overall design and styling isn’t too different from the hatchback, both variants have prominent grilles and angular headlights.

The interior room has increased for both front and rear passengers and the dashboard is the same as the new generation of A Class hatchback. It has the same advanced infotainment and includes the new MBUX infotainment system with touch control and voice recognition. Mercedes also claim that the drag coefficient of this model is better than any other car currently on sale, making it more economic compared to competitors.

When this model goes on sale, there will initially be two engine options available, a 1.3 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, the A200, capable of producing 161bhp. For diesel drivers, the A180d is available, a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine offering 114bhp. More engines will be on offer further down the road. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual gearbox, but like the hatchback, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with steering wheel mounted shift paddles is an option.

The A Class Saloon is set to rival the Audi A3 and the upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. Mercedes also plan to offer a limited number of 4-wheel drive versions, including the A35 4Matic and A45 4Matic from their AMG Performance range.

Prices are predicted to start from around £27,000 and will be available at the end of the year – what do you think of the new A Class Saloon?
